The whole Tiger Woods ordeal has brought us back to a familiar situation...which is when a person in the public eye makes a bad mistake and ends up having his/her life followed by papparazi no matter where they go. Said celebrity then makes a statement about how their life shouldn't be on the covers of magazines and how people should respect their privacy.
That's good in theory....HOWEVER....it seems like they want it both ways here. For instance, look at Tiger's situation. The money he makes from actual golf is miniscule compared to his endorsements. Why does he get endorsements?? It's partly for his golf and partly because he's always had a squeaky clean image. A person who is the best at what they do AND has a great image is a goldmine for companies. Why else do you think that people who are thought of as "thugs" can't get anything but sneaker deals?? You think Accenture, Buick and Gillette would have chosen Tiger as a spokesman if he spoke in ebonics and had domestic abuse charges in his past?? Hell no. So that very image that he created is what largely has funded his lifestyle. I'm sure he enjoys having a 2.6 million dollar home and almost unlimited funds to buy whatever the hell he wants. His wife just bought an estate on an island for 2 million bucks as if it was nothing. Could he get that with golfing earnings alone?? I can answer that for you: no.
So when you're reaping the benefits of how you've set yourself up, I think it's only to be expected that if you make some really stupid mistakes that it would probably be played out in the media. Did he really think that having affairs with a dozen women would never come out?? I mean...REALLY??
Yeah, I get wanting privacy. But he just isn't going to get it in his situation. It's like me complaining about being busted for looking at porn at a job where internet usage is heavily monitored. You KNOW that you're going to get busted, and when you do, you can't play the "leave me alone!" card.
So what do all of you think??
Did people who are "following" this blog get a notification via Email?? or is that completely worthless? If it didn't send an Email or do SOMETHING to notify people, I have to wonder about this whole system....

i didn't get an email notification about your new blog, and i signed up using my gmail account...bizarre. but i did see your notice on myspace.
ReplyDeletethe celebrity v. fame fight has always bothered me. kurt cobain was one of the first stars of my generation to be so resentful of fame yet to obviously benefit by it (band made it big, made money, basically started the grunge fad).
celebs give up their privacy when they become famous and for the most part, i think this is how it should be. we as fans are throwing our money at them, so of course we're feeding the insipid us weekly and ok! rags that hire paparazzi to follow all the it boys and girls. celebs are marketing themselves to the public - their whole selves. but why do some stumble and fall (britney spears, anyone?) while others seem to still have a bit of a private life (lady gaga)? i think it's attitude. lady gaga knows the paparazzi feed her fame indirectly, because the stories feed fans, and she welcomes it. others see paparazzi as an annoyance, and that annoys ME. i think to myself, what, so you can't be bothered? when the flashbulbs stop, you know you're toast.
that's just my two cents.
Think you are pretty correct on this one. Unfortunately when you become someone who is in the public eye, you are going to have people in your personal business.
ReplyDeleteBut even when you're not famous and rich, people are in other people's business. It seems to be human nature to talk about other people's fortunes and misgivings, and I doubt it will end anytime soon. Guess it's time to come to expect it...
I agree with you completely, Sara. If we're fueling them by giving them money and they're putting themselves out there....I dont see how they can really claim that it's so shocking that people are interested in their personal lives. They generally don't shoo away cameras when things are going well, do they?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. When you put yourself in the public eye, your own fault when being in the public eye blows up in your face. Of course, there IS a difference between not having privacy, and paparazzi HARRASSMENT. I think that to a certain extent, there should be some laws about distance. When you literally can't walk down the street without tripping over people with cameras... that does seem a bit excessive to me. There should be a ten feet rule or something... ESPECIALLY when kids are involved. They should be protected more than most. Their parents may have signed up for the celeb life, but they didn't...

I didn't get an email notification. I saw your notice on myspace. On topic. I'm completely with you. I have no sympathy for Tiger himself. He put himself in this position. Like you said 12 + women and seriously didn't think you would get caught? Seriously how can he not know it was only a matter of time before this all unfolded before his eyes? And then cry for privacy? Even people who don't go looking for this sort of information have heard about this whole issue, probably more than they care to hear.
ReplyDeleteLauren (wunderkin72) said it best, I think.
ReplyDeleteI think it is ridiculous how celebs do stuff just to have their name and photo all over the place then bitch when they get caught doing something bad...who cares if he did cheat...I'm sorry but I don't know any female that is married or just in a relationship with a guy that has never been cheated on before...it's just how this world is now...it's sad
ReplyDeleteagain, no email notice here, either. but this page is bookmarked, so i check it often. please don't stop doing this blog. i enjoy your ramblings.
ReplyDeletenow, on topic...it's bullshit that he doesn't want all of this out in public. he sure didn't mind his pretty-boy-norelco-squeaky-clean-"caublinasian" image being plastered all over every available public media. so, what? just because he gets busted being a dick, he wants a suddenly private life? uh huh, no way...doesn't work like that, G. you wanted the money and power and fame...it brought you to the top, it'll knock you to the bottom.
what really pisses me off are the celebs who complain that they never wanted to be considered any kind of roll model. i call bullshit on that, too! how are you going to immerse your life and your work in a career built on being followed by people, and not expect to be held accountable for the image that you put out? even bad press is press. i hate golf. couldn't give two shits about Tiger Woods. but this whole douche-bag-sex-whore thing has brought him more fame than ever. i've heard more about him than i ever had before. this may fuck up his pretty image and his popularity, but i don't think this will jeopardize his fame at all.
like kira said, cheating happens. Tiger was just a dumb shit and did it with People watching. i have no sympathy for idiocy. but i will damn sure help his wife pay for the island estate taxes by buying every celebrity trash rag i can get my hands on. what? you thought i sat around reading Chaucer?
As much as I hate how celeb obsessed America is I do think even Tiger Woods benefits from all the trash that gets sold in supermarkets. He's all that people can talk about right now. Good or bad he just got more popular. Do you think there's enough people that will stop buying his stuff to make him broke? No way there's still gonna be people out there that will buy more of his stuff because they think "he was setup" and there's no way he's going to not take the money. Trust me celebs make more money being on tabloid covers than they loose because attention is money.
ReplyDeleteNo I didn't get a notification that you posted a new blog.
I did get the email that you sent to me but no notification.
ReplyDeleteLike I said on your other blog, having your dirty laundry aired is just part of being famous. You don’t really have any privacy when you’re a celeb. He is a moron if he honestly thought this would never come out. What an asshat! I would have gone after him with a golf club too.
I would say that being famous, means being in the public eye. I think that it comes w/ it. I think that everyone wants it and of course its a double edge sword I mean really.... all the money the fame.... it is bound to have its drawbacks... and yeah, having people prob. into your personal life really sucks, but if that is how it is... then maybe you need to live your life in a way that wont bite you in the butt.... unless you dont care. ya know. he prob. shouldnt have cheated. He did. Did he think it wouldnt end some day, or get found out? I dont think he owes anyone an explanation. But he cant be upset that people want to know whats going on. I dont know. :) i think id rather be rich and famous and deal w/ the intrution into my privacy :) It should be a compliment that people care enuf about you as a person to want to know. BUT when its just gossip .... maybe we could back off a bit, ya know. I hope his marriage doesnt fall apart, but it really isnt any of our business if it does or doesnt. WHAT MAKES ME UPSET is one of the other woman crying on tv and saying how upset she is w/ how upset his wife feels.... give me a break!!! then why are you on tv talking about it?! get a life! but yeah, he should lose his endorsements if they are based on his clean image.
ReplyDeleteI second what Wunderkin72 said. And I don't feel sorry for Tiger and his "respect my privacy" schtick. Too late for that now, buddy.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. There are certainly times when the media takes it far above and beyond what appropriate coverage and sensationalized the heck out of it. But, really, that's kind of what we pay for: drama that is not our own.
ReplyDeleteI predict Tiger's next endorsement contract = condoms.
I would compare this to Michael Phelps losing his Kellogg's endorsement after his marijuana use came out. Kellogg's wanted the bad boy gone good story, not a pot head endorsing their cereal.
ReplyDeleteWhen you're following on Google it shows on your blog dashboard when there are new blog posts by people you're following (convoluted sentence much?).
ReplyDeleteI just created this profile and your posts show up on my dashboard so I think I am one of your "followers" now. Wow that kind of sounds like a cult! Lol
ReplyDeleteI look forward to reading the blogs to come! :)
Ave, what is a blog dashboard? I'm on Google...
ReplyDeleteI didn't get an email. I'm just sick of hearing of celeberties. Probably because they spend so much money of things like..well..Paris spent $300,000 FOR A DOG HOUSE. It wouldn't be so bad if she gave some sort of charity $300,000 also. But to hear that literally makes me sick. Maybe it's because I don't have a job now and I'm horribly jealous...
ReplyDeleteNo email here either. Tiger Woods made his bed, now he can sleep in it!
ReplyDeleteSo I followed but I didn't get an e-mail notification. This is probably because I chose not to opt in to e-mail notifications. It does give the option.
ReplyDeleteId like to note that its very possibly that Tiger is not a complete idiot, and that he did realize these indiscretions of his may someday surface. On the other hand I heard on the radio(unreliable source) the other day that his attorneys had been paying women off for years not to talk. For years. Lots of monies. So maybe he's only somewhat of an idiot for thinking that would work out. On the other, other hand he could have known it would surface and he may have even planned to gain more publicity for it BUT I don't think he foresaw his wife beating him and his car up like a nerdy red headed kid on the schoolyard teased one too many times.
When you are a celebrity most of the things you do are going to be in the public eye. Now the acts I think should remain private (ie: no taking photos of them through the windows of their house) but if you are stupid enough to have an affair and contact that person with a paper trail (text messages, voice mails, emails) you are just asking to be caught. I don't endorse cheating, but Tiger certainly left loaf sized bread crumbs to get caught.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say, since everyone else did such a good job of already beating him up? What a freaking dope. Famous or not, cheating is just wrong. I hope he loses everything, maybe that would teach people a lesson (well, probably not, but we can all hope, right?)
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree. It's always said that celebrities "chose" to be in the spotlight. I don't really see it that way. They made a career out of doing what they love. It's us "little people" that put them on a pedestal and make them out to be superhumans or gods.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel bad for Tiger. Well, I kind of do. Who I feel bad for is his son and his wife! It's gotta suck for his wife to try and get on with her life and everytime she turns around her face is plastered all over another gossip magazine. And his son is going to grow up knowing every dirty little detail of his dad's infidelity and that's just not kosher with me. But it's my own fault for reading (some of) the bullshit, I suppose.
